Fall protection has to suit both the access point and the task carried out there. Which cage, which rail configuration and which cut-outs are right depends on the hatch arrangement and on what the operator does at it.
S&S Technical supplies GREENLINE safety cages and enclosures, the attached fall protection that surrounds an operator working at the hatch. Every GREENLINE gangway can carry one. Where the gangway gets the operator to the vehicle, the cage is what protects them once they are standing on it. They are specified with the gangway rather than after it, because the rail configuration and any cut-outs depend on the hatch arrangement.
Why order your GREENLINE safety cages through S&S Technical
Which cage and which rail configuration suit a hatch depends on what happens there: the dome, the loading arm or hose, and the operator’s task. S&S Technical designs loading systems, so we look at the loading connection and the cage together and specify a cage arrangement that works with it, on new gangways or ones already installed.
Standard configurations
- 2-rail railcar safety cages. 12 in top rail height on GREEN’s standard 8 ft by 8 ft railcar cage. Sized for railcar domes.
- 3-rail tank truck safety cages. The common specification for tanker tops.
- 4-rail tank truck safety cages. Where a higher enclosure is wanted.
- Custom. Cages are routinely built to suit an application rather than selected from a list.
Options
- Self-levelling, so the enclosure stays square as the gangway angle changes
- Vertical storage where headroom or a canopy constrains the raised position
- Optional cut-outs or hinged openings
- Redesigned attachments for fitting to GREENLINE gangways
- Uncoated aluminum as standard, with galvanised or painted steel and custom finishes available
What decides the specification
- The gangway it will attach to, if one is already installed
- Vehicle type and dome or hatch arrangement
- Whether loading arms or hoses pass through the enclosure
- Overhead clearance, including any canopy
- Whether the cage must store vertically
- Rail configuration preference
Common questions
What does a self-levelling cage do?
It keeps the enclosure square to the vehicle as the gangway angle changes. Without it, the cage geometry shifts with every change in deck height.
Can a cage be retrofitted to an existing gangway?
Often yes, depending on the gangway. Tell us what is installed and we will confirm whether the attachment suits it.
Do I need cut-outs?
Only if loading arms or hoses have to pass through the enclosure. They are a common requirement at bays where the operator connects from inside the cage.
