Now Installing: 20-Car Butadiene Rail Unloading Platform Package in Louisiana
We’re excited to highlight a major project currently being installed — a dual-sided, 20-car butadiene rail unloading platform designed for high throughput, operational reliability, and most importantly, operator safety.
Delivered by S&S Technical as a fully engineered, PE-stamped solution, this system supports 10 cars per side and integrates best-in-class equipment across the entire unloading process.
Built for Safe & Efficient Operations
The unloading rack provides full-length top access to railcars with:
- Track-mounted gangways that adjust for railcar misspotting
- Integrated safety cages and fall protection
- Non-slip grating and guarded work zones
Operators can safely and efficiently access each manway — without delays or compromises.
Why We Use Unloading Arms (Not Hoses)
This system utilizes Dixon unloading arms, replacing traditional hoses.
Key advantages:
- Eliminates hose handling and whip hazards
- Improves containment and reduces leak risk
- Provides smooth, controlled positioning
- Delivers long-term reliability with less maintenance
Each arm is also equipped with Snappy Joe Emergency Shutdown (ESD) valves, providing immediate isolation in emergency scenarios.
Compressor-Driven Liquid Transfer (No Vapor Recovery)
The system includes (5) Blackmer compressor skids used strictly for liquid transfer via pressure differential.
How it works:
- Compressors introduce pressure into the railcar vapor space
- This pushes liquid butadiene out through the unloading arms
- Product flows to the header → meter skid → storage
Why this approach:
- Eliminates the need for pumps that are difficult to prime/keep primed
- Provides consistent, controlled flow
- Simplifies maintenance and improves reliability
Custody Transfer Accuracy
A 6″ meter skid with Endress+Hauser Coriolis technology and OMNI flow computer ensures:
- High-accuracy mass flow measurement
- Real-time flow, density, and temperature data
- Full compliance with custody transfer requirements
Turnkey Engineering Execution
From concept through installation, this project includes:
- PE-stamped drawings and calculations
- Structural and mechanical design
- Skid fabrication and system integration
